Leftover Maraschino Cherries

Disclaimer:  Let me just say, S & I are not huge drinkers...we have a few drinks, occasionally on weekends...sometimes on weekends, we have none...we drink responsibly, never while driving, and we are never under the influence while operating heavy machinery.  So, please drink responsibly, as well....

Technically, this post should be titled:  Drunken Cherries, Cherry Infused Bourbon, Man-ly Shirley Temples, Cherry Cola, & Twizzler Straws.  But that was a bit run-on-ish, even for me.  I have a lot to cover, here...so bear with me, I am hopped up on bourbon & sugar right now!  Don't judge me...please  refer to the disclaimer provided above.

Let's be honest, shall we?  Cone Of Safety:  Most of you probably have a jar of maraschino cherries your fridge.  Sure, they are loaded with artificial colors, preservatives, and may contain the occasional pit (which has also been preserved and colored artificially), but they do and a certain level of festivity, or je ne sais qua when atop a dessert or beverage - especially the long-stemmed variety.

So now that the Holiday Season & Valentine's day is behind us, we are left with an opened, 3/4 of the way full jar of cherries...we might as well get them drunk! Sure, Makers Mark offers bourbon flavored cherries, in which the alcohol has been heated and cooked off during the jarring process, but I have Makers Mark...I have cherries...and I don't mind the a-a-a-a-a-al-co-hol.  Again, disclaimer above...

Drunken Cherries
Drain your maraschino cherries add them into a clean jar, reserve the cherry syrup for a later use.  Pour bourbon, or alcohol of choice, over the cherries until they covered, we want to keep them below the surface; nothing exposed above the liquid.

Put a lid on it!  Seal the jar, let it all mellow for at least 4-7 days at room temperature.  Mine have been soaking for several weeks now, I just put them in the fridge...I don't know why, I just did.

The alcohol will preserve the cherries, yet, I don't know how long it will be before they just start disintegrating.  Again, mine have been soaking for 3 weeks, and still hangin' tough.

Cherry Infused Bourbon
So, this is like a twofer...while the bourbon is seeping into the cherries, it is also extracting out their cherry-ness...thus leaving cherries that taste like bourbon, and bourbon that tastes, and looks, like maraschino cherries.

It you wanted to party-like-a-rock-starrrrr, you could just do shots of this red, cherry flavored concoction, or you could make a....Man-ly Shirley Temple?

Man-ly Shirley Temple
"Surely, you can't be serious?"
Sorry,  I couldn't resist.
A Man-ly Shirley Temple is just ginger ale spiked with cherry infused bourbon...and don't forget those cherries!!

Fill a glass with ice, drop in a few bourbon cherries...add some bourbon...top with soda, or seltzer...boom!  Man-ly Shirley Temple.

Cherry Cola & Twizzler Straws
Not a drinker?  I shall not exclude you!!  How 'bout a cherry cola, a fancified red sugar-rimmed glass & a Twizzler straw?  Interested?

Rub a little cherry syrup (remember, we reserved it while making those cherries?) around the rim of a glass, dip the glass in some red sugar, add ice, some cherry syrup, and cola.  Cut the ends off a Twizzler to use as a straw.

So now that I have experimented with all of the above, I cannot wait to try doing this all over again....next time with fresh, local, "real" cherries.
